Vendor Update: News and Product Announcements
IBM, TrueDemand Demo RFID Promotion Management App.
IBM and software partner TrueDemand will demonstrate an RFID-enabled promotion management application that delivers value to retailers and manufacturers. Several aspects of the application's functionality will be demonstrated. These include: Predictive Inventory Control: a common view of promotion inventory with live reports on inventory levels; Actionable Analytics: proactive identification of potential promotion risks before they occur, such as insufficient shelf space, and the ability to identify lost sales, low customer closure rates and other promotion performance problems; In-Flight Management: live retailer replenishment orders, retailer distribution center and store allocations, shelf replenishment frequency and store labor management; and Promotion Execution: the ability to enable manufacturers and retailers to accept, view and confirm promotion management tasks. Benefits delivered include preventing out-of-stocks, improving promotion sales, avoiding end-of-promotion overstocks and optimizing product merchandising.

Atos Origin Unveils Scaleable RFID Solution Portfolio In the next phase of RFID implementations, new challenges will emerge, including how to handle the information generated by RFID and how to maintain the RFID infrastructure, which will be upgraded frequently. To realize the business value of RFID, companies need to create a systems infrastructure able to support "real-time management by exception." NCR Displays End-to-End RFID Solutions
NCR Corp. will display the company's end-to-end RFID solutions, which encompass thoughtware, hardware, software and services. The Oracle Sensor-Based Services Initiative enables partners to better exploit new RFID and sensor opportunities in business re-engineering, consulting and solutions implementation by leveraging Oracle's end-to-end expertise from data capture to information management.

Sybase, LogicaCMG Demonstrate Asset Tracking and Asset Condition Monitoring
Sybase, a leader in managing and mobilising information, and LogicaCMG, a major IT consultancy and systems integration, have teamed up to demonstrate how their organizations complement one another through a diverse set of their RFID asset-tracking projects and technologies. Avery Dennison Demos High-Volume EPC Gen 2 Tag
Avery Dennison RFID, a global leader in the RFID marketplace, has started commercial production of the AD-220, the world's first high-volume Gen 2 RFID tag. Avery will show off this high-performance, general-purpose RFID tag, which can be used in a wide range of carton- and pallet-labeling applications. This competitively priced UHF Class 1 tag, based on the Gen 2 EPC protocol, features 96-bit read/write memory and an operating frequency of 902-928 MHz. Avery Dennison will also show off its high-speed strap-attach process, which delivers a tenfold improvement in the speed, cost and reliability of producing RFID labels compared to conventional methods.

Cisco Offers Intelligent Networking Foundation for RFID
Cisco Systems will introduce its Intelligent Foundation for Radio Frequency Identification, which helps companies introduce RF technologies into the supply chain to increase visibility into product information and optimize business flow for lower operating costs. The Cisco RFID Solution delivers integrated RFID capabilities and the support that enterprises need to optimize available network capacity and simplify RFID infrastructure deployment. Key elements include the Cisco Application-Oriented Network for RFID; Cisco Services for RFID; Cisco Wireless Location Service; and supporting RFID-related products from partners ConnecTerra, Intermec Technologies, PanGo Networks and ThingMagic.

Markem Launches RFID SmartStart Desktop
Markem Corp. will launch its RFID SmartStart Desktop, which allows for quick short-term RFID compliance, while preparing for the future with integrated software and services for distribution centers and packaging lines. The benefits of the RFID SmartStart Desktop compliance package include quickly meeting RFID mandates at the lowest cost; utilizing the Zebra R4M plus desktop RFID printer/encoder for reliable printing and encoding of RFID labels and bad tag detection; and automatically allocating a unique Electronic Product Code with CoLOS RFID Software for every tag for a proven and lasting information platform.

Nokia Launches Field Force Solution
The Nokia Field Force Solution enables field personnel to capture important data accurately and efficiently by simply touching an RFID tag with a mobile phone. The two-way mobile data capture solution is comprised of Nokia RFID-equipped mobile phones; a developer toolbox for creating application-specific Local Interactions (LI) Java clients that run on the mobile phones; and the Nokia LI Server, which provides a central point for all data and event recording. The solution is simple to integrate into existing back-end systems via XML without expensive upgrades, and offers multifunctional capabilities, such as route management, session alerts and instructions to field operatives.

Zebra Technologies Shows European UHF Printer/Encoder
In addition to its popular desktop HF R2844-Z model, Zebra Technologies will show off its UHF R4Mplus printer/encoder, which has been uniquely configured to support European specifications and regulatory requirements, and can operate at 100 percent duty cycle relative to encoding tags. The R4Mplus also supports new, emerging protocols via firmware upgrades, including the EPC Gen 2 protocol, offering investment protection as RFID standards evolve. In addition, by offering XML-enabled printing, the R4Mplus supports easier integration with ERP applications, such as SAP and Oracle. The R4Mplus offers an immediate, low-risk and cost-effective solution for suppliers racing to conduct RFID pilot tests, as well as for meeting RFID compliance mandates issued by the major retailers in Europe.

CAEN Releases the EASY2READ Family of UHF Readers
CAEN will release its EASY2READ family of UHF readers for the European market. The three families of readers—small, medium and large—are designed to provide customers with the best reader for their UHF [RFID] application. Small readers are designed to solve the problem of proximity reading/writing of tags and labels; medium-size readers combine compactness and full power; and large readers address full portal applications. The two latter families are compliant with the new ETSI 302 208 UHF regulations and ready for EPC Gen2. EASY2READ products join the A928 reader, which has already been deployed successfully in several European RFID test centers and pilot installations.

Identec Solutions Presents First 100-Meter
RFID Read-Write Device in Compact Flash Format
Identec Solutions will present the world's first RFID read/write device in Compact Flash format with a range of up to 100 meters (300 feet). The i-CARD CF is compatible with Identec's Intelligent Long-Range transponders from the i-Q and i-B series and can easily be integrated into laptops, handhelds and other mobile devices by inserting it into the CF card slot. The i-CARD CF can rapidly identify up to 100 tags per second, even if they are moving quickly. Using a special anti-collision algorithm, customers can localize up to 2,000 tags within the read zone, with no interference. The solution is supplied with drivers for various operating systems, including Windows CE/9x/NT/2000/XP and Linux.

TAGSYS Introduces Flexible Module Tag for Pharma
TAGSYS is the first company to introduce the FM (Flexible Module) tag, measuring only 16mm x 31mm and employing a read/write lockable chip that can be supplied as an inlay or a converted tag designed to be integrated with pharmaceutical manufacturers' brand labels by their packager of choice. The tag's unique flexibility allows it to integrate easily with drug packaging, including round or square plastic bottles, tubes or cartons. Offered with 512 bits of memory (384 bits of user memory), the FM tag is designed to deliver virtually flawless functionality through 100,000 read/write cycles. With a high degree of versatility, FM is also applicable in a wide range of fashion/apparel applications.

ThingMagic Displays EPC Gen 2 Reader
ThingMagic's Mercury4 fixed RFID reader was selected by Tesco and is also used by major U.S. retailers and the U.S. Department of Defense. The Mercury4 uses advanced Software Defined Radio to read any tag, including EPC Generation 2, EPC Generation 1 (Classes 1 and 0) and ISO 18000-6B. The reader is certified by EPCglobal for all modes of Gen 2 operation, including dense reader mode, and by Cisco as interoperable with the Cisco RFID Solution.
