SmartCode Debuts Smallest Chip
SmartCode, a Tel Aviv, Israel-based RFID systems provider, says it has created the prototype for an RFID microchip that is 0.25 millimeters square. The smaller size of the chip reduces the overall cost of the tag. SmartCode says it will sell Class 1 EPC tags for 5 to 10 cents in volumes of 1 billion or more. Full Story >

Intel, Retailers Form EPC Group
Three of Europe’s largest retailers—Carrefour from France, Metro from Germany and Tesco from the U.K.—have joined forces with Intel to form an independent working group called the EPC Retail Users Group of Europe. The new group will provide a forum to share information and experience in a way that should help speed the development and deployment of Electronic Product Code networks within their European operations. ObjectStore Devises EPC Database
Database developer ObjectStore has announced an edition of its in-memory database designed specifically for data collected by EPC networks and that will enable its customers to collect and interrogate data from EPC networks in real time. Full Story >

MARC Adds RFID to Supply Chain
Supply chain execution application specialist MARC Global has launched its first RFID-capable offerings, partnering with EPC pioneer OATSystems to deliver RFID connectivity. Under the terms of the partnership, MARC will sell OATSystems’ Senseware RFID middleware to connect its supply chain applications to an installed RFID network. Full Story >

Gift Cards Go Contactless
Contactless payment solution provider ViVOtech showed off its ViVOgiftcard system, claiming it to be the first contactless gift card to reach the market. The company says that its ViVOgiftcard gives retailers a way to link the contactless payment cards into their existing point-of-sale system and offers them a variety of formats and shapes for their gift cards.
